ENGLISH POLICE MANHANDLED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 3, 6.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI, January 2 Inspector George Bennet, a Londoner, in charge of the police station at Soochow Creek, informed the police that the chief of the Japanese marines severely manhandled him, when he went to the naval headquarters in connection with the allegation that he impeded the progress of a Japanese military motor-cyclist. Inspector Bennett explained that the cyclist was unable to pass his car, which was obstructed by a lorry ahead. Sergeant James Stuart, another Londoner, complains that when he went to the Japanese headquarters to discover the reason for Inspector Bennett’s prolonged absence he was attacked and forcibly ejected.
AMERICAN TANKER DESTROYED SUSPICIOUS FIRE REPORTED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 3, 8.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI, January 3 The United States gunboat Oahu has wirelessed that the tanker Meian, which was beached on December 13, to prevent sinking, caught fire in mysterious circumstances. The vessel is a total loss.

CONSUL’S OFFICIAL REPORT COUNTER-OFFENSIVE SUCCEEDS By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 3. The following Hankow cablegram has been received by the Chinese Consul: “As the result of a counter offensive, the Chinese have recaptured Fuyang, forty kilometres south-west of Hangchow, and have pursued the enemy towards Chuangtang, twelve kilometres from Hangchow. Meanwhile another Chinese column, which has recovered Kwangteh threatened Szean, the Japanese base of operations on the Chekiang Anhwei border. The Chinese still hold Weihsien in Shangtung.
