MAN DROWNED
WIFE’S VALIANT ATTEMPT AT RESCUE By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 3. A visitor to Wellington, Jack McConchie, who was staying at Hataitai, was drowned while fishing off the rocks near the patent slip. Evans Bay. riiortly after mid-day to-day. McConchie was accompanied by his wife and a young boy, Ronnie Weir, and fell into the water, A'hich was very deep at that point, while trying to regain the boy’s hat after it had blown off. Mrs McConchie, who is a strong swimmer, dived in when she saw her husband was in difficulties, but the water was rough and she was urr.ble to get to him in time. She swam until exhausted and then, seeing that the search was hopeless, returned to the shore, where she had to be assisted from the water. She was taken to hospital by the’ambulance suffering from shock. A party from the Kilbirnie police station under Sergeant Dukes, assisted by Cyril Headland and the crew of the yacht Viking, conducted a search for McConchie’s body during the afternoon, but owing to the rough condition of the sea bottom their efforts were hampered and the body was not recovered.
