JEWRY’S THREAT TO HIT BACK.

Newspaper forecasts of world wide retaliation by the leaders of international Jewry, in reply to the persecution of Jews in many countries, will no doubt arouse the widest of interest. Faced with persecution in Poland, Rumania, Germany, Austria and elsewhere, the Jewry, we are informed this morning, has made up its mind to hit back. It is significant in this connection to note that representatives of the World Jewish Congress assembled at Geneva addressed protests to the British, French, and United States Governments and to the League of Nations, calling attention to the “anti-Semitic measures,” which are stated to be contemplated by Rumania. The Congress added that such measures are a violation of the Minorities Treaty. The battle will be fought, it is suggested, on the world’s Stock Exchanges. “Most anti-Semitic States,” The Sunday Chronicle points out, “which are burdened with debt may find their existence threatened.” There is nothing unusual in the persecution of the Jews, but it is of more than passing interest that international Jewry contemplates hitting back. But just how far such a plan could be operated without punishing friends as well as enemies, is difficult to see. It is nevertheless of importance in face of Jewry s appeal to Great Britain and the United States and the hints of organised reprisals through the stock exchange, that both Mr E. S. Montagu (Governor of the Bank of England) and Mr Henry Morgen than Jnnr. (Secretary to the United States Treasury) are among the Jews prominent in finance.
