The January issue of the New Zealand Railways Magazine has a well balanced range of reading and illustrations. G. G. Stewart begins a new series of special features under the appropriate heading of “Dream Places,” the romantic lands of poets’ dreams. Ken Alexander in a characteristic humorous sketch “Here’s Health” breezily tells the world that health is better than wealth. James Cowan gives a very pleasant story of a canoe voyage up the Mokau River. “CounterIrritants” is a well told love story by H. M. Hirst. “A Hallowe’en Adventure” is a delightful story for children by Aroha Bruce, quaintly illustrated by M. Matthews. Dr. Marsden gives a worthy survey of the brilliant life of the famous Lord Rutherford. O. N. Gillespie takes his readers joyfully through the “Wonderland of the Pacific,” an article inspired by the recent publication “New Zealand Railways Illustrated.” C. H. Gordon offers the romance of Jackson's Bay, South Westland. Stuart Perry sets out the charm of Rakiura (Stewart Island). V. B. Murray tells of Nature’s Colour Pranks on Lake Waikaremoana. New aspects of the Buller Valley are given by Bernard Teague. The Women’s Section has some specially interesting notes and comments for mothers who now have the problem of the school holidays.
