SUCCESSFUL GALA

SPORTS CONCLUDE CARNIVAL With ideal holiday weather in place of the dull days of the past week, yesterday’s gala which concluded the queen carnival should have been outstandingly successful As it v/as, the spectators were comparatively small in number and a splendid sports programme and range of side-shows suffered in consequence. Care had been taken by the Queen Carnival Committee to make the competitive events as varied and attractive as possible. Competitions were provided for persons of all ages and a liberal range of novelty items were introduced. The side-shows were organised by the various competing

committees and there were in addition two competitions for fat lambs. Motor-

car events were introduced for the first time at a Temuka sports gathering, and there were also bagpipe music and Highland dancing competitions. Members of the Ashburton Pipe Band joined the Temuka pipers and the composite band opened the sports by marching through the town to the Domain where they later gave selections and marches. The weight-estimating competitions resulted: Domain Board’s lamb (correct weight 7231 b): J. Burns 7311 b. Caledonian Society’s lamb (651 b R. S. Black (Pleasant Point) 661 lb.
