FAIRLIE WINS PAIRS

BOWLING TOURNEY OVER HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY The completion of the pairs competition last evening brought to a close the Christmas tournament of the South Canterbury Bowling Centre. Boulter (s) and Whitehead, of Fairlie, were the winners, defeating I. Maclaren (s) and C. Maclaren (West End) by 23 points to 12. The results of the post-sectional games were:— First Round Kebby 18, Alloo 17. Wallwork 24, Fairhall 23. Dass .7, Drummond 15. Second Round Gray 19, Dass 7. Parry 26, Donaldson 16. Maclaren 15, Wilson 10. Wallwork 21, A. Clark 12. * McDonald 28, Berry 13. Boulter 22, Darroch 21. Edyvean 27, Kebby 7. Lee 16, Ramage 14. Third Round Parry 16, Gray 15; Maclaren 25, Wallwork 6. Boulter 15, McDonald 11; Edyvean 19, Lee 14. The Semi-Finals Maclaren beat Parry (Waimate) 17-12. Parry won the first head, but Maclaren took the next three to lead 4-1. The next two went to Waimate, giving them the lead 5-4. The seventh, eight and ninth heads went to West End, Maclaren leading then by 8 to 5. Parry took a four on the tenth, making the score 9-8 in his favour, but Maclaren equalised in the next and took the twelfth to lead 10-9. Parry got one on the thirteenth, but West End won the next three heads to take the score to 17-11. Parry had taken the seventeenth with one point when time was called.

The other semi-final went to Boulter from Edyvean, by 20 points to 13 on the nineteenth head. Boulter took the first head, but the next three went to Edyvean, giving him a lead of 5-1. Boulter won the fifth and sixth, bringing the score to 5- Edyvean increased his lead to 6- on the seventh head, but over the next three heads Boulter took the score to 10-6. Edyvean won the eleventh and twelfth, but was still two down. A three to Boulter on the next made the score 13-8. Edyvean made the score 13-10 on the fourteenth, but the next two heads left Boulter in the lead 17-10. Edyvean secured three on the seventeenth, but Boulter took a single and a pair on the next two, making the score 20-13 in his favour. The Final The first head was well contested, Maclaren notching a single. Fairlie drew the shot with their second in the next head, Whitehead’s last ball leaving Fairlie lying two. Maclaren’s first bowl drew the shot, howqver, and then lay two. His third was also a counter. Boulter drove and West End secured two on the head. The third head was well contested, Bdulter securing a brace. The fourtl/ was a good head, West End taking ine. 4-2. Maclaren’s second left Boulter only one, however, and his third left him lying two. Boulter’s drive failed, and the head ended with the score Maclaren 6, Boulter 4. The seventh head saw some good bowling by the leads, and Boulter drew a beauty to He shot. West End had one shot at the change-over in the eighth, and Maclaren drew another to take two on the head. 8-5. The ninth head saw the fortunes changed with nearly every bowl, and Boulter eventually took one. Maclaren’s first drew the shot at the tenth head, but Whitehead’s next beat him to the lie. Boulter drew another, lying two, but Maclaren drew the shot with a nice last bowl. Maclaren 9. Boulter 6. West End were lying two in the eleventh, but Boulter drove and burnt the head. The replay saw Fairlie take two after a measure, making the score Maclaren 9, Boulter 8. Whitehead drew two beautiful shots in the twelfth, a long head. A drive by Maclaren sent the jack into the ditch, but Fairlie were still lying three. Boulter 11, Maclaren 9. Whitehead’s first at the thirteenth was a toucher end his second also lay. Maclaren drew a beautiful shot with his second, however, but Whitehead dislodged the shot bowl to lie two. Maclaren, with a drive, left West End lying one, increasing the lead to two with his third, making the score 11 all West End were lying two on the ■fourteenth till a toucher by Whitehead left Fairlie lying two, the lead being increased to three with a measure for four at the change-over. Boulter made the four a certainty, and after Maclaren drove Fairlie were still lying three. Boulter’s last also lay, and the measure made the lead five. Boulter 16, Maclaren 11.

Maclaren lay two on the fifteenth, but Whitehead’s drive left Fairlie two up. Boulter’s first and third also lay. Maclaren reduced the lead to one, but Boulter sent down a toucher, and Maclaren burnt the head. In the replay Whitehead’s third drove the jack to near the boundary and left Fairlie lying two. Boulter’s first also lay, as also did his second, Fairlie notching four on the head. Boulter 20, Maclaren 11. Fairlie were lying two at the changeover on the sixteenth head. Boulter’s third alsc lay, but Maclaren reduced it to one. Boulter 21, Maclaren 11. The seventh was a full length head. Fairlie were one up at the changeover, and Maclaren knocked up a front bowl on to the jack with his second to make Fairlie lie two, but trailed the jack with his last to secure the shot. Boulter 21, Maclaren 12. When the skips changed over on the eighteenth West End were lying one. Maclaren drew another, but Boulter displaced the shot bowl to take one. Boulter 22, Maclaren 12. The nineteenth was a long head, and West End were lying three • itll Boulter played a beauty with his third. Maclaren just failed to trail the jack with his last, and the match ended with the score Fairlie 23, West "nd 12.
