WAIMATE

NEW YEAR’S EVE BANDS ON PARADE Although New Year's Eve was overcast, with misty rain falling at intervals, the night was pleasant and fine and a large crowd thronged the streets until a late hour, the township was gaily decorated with coloured lights. Small boys, and others not so small, kept up a continuous battery of fireworks and the Waimate Pipe Band on parade further added to the festive atmosphere. The crowd was evidently in good spirits and many more than last year remained to greet the new year. On the approach of midnight the Silver Band came on parade and took up their position outside the Post Office. As the chimes rang out the dawn of the new year the band struck up the strains of “Auld Lang Syne" and the crowd in the vicinity spontaneously joined hands for a lusty chorus. Fireworks added to the din and another year had been acclaimed.
