In this issue the Railway Department advises the running of a special passenger train leaving Timaru at 11.55 a.m. for Oamaru on Sunday. January 9. Gaiety and friendship were the predominating keynotes at the Timaru Labour Social committee’s weekly euchre and dance held in the Scottish Hall on Thursday night. The large number of patrons entered into the spirit of the festive season when gaily coloured balloons were thrown out from all directions. The lucky winners were Miss Evans and Mr Andresson. The Monte Carlo winners were Miss Pope and Mr Richardson. Those successful at euchre were Mrs Smallridge, Mr Gellatly and Mr Miller. The innermost part of Whangarei harbour, hitherto known officially as “Kioreroa,” is to be renamed "Port i Whangarei” from July 1. The change ! is made by a proclamation in the latest Gazette under the authority of the De- { signation of Districts Act. 1908. The name “Kioreroa," which means "long rat,” appears to have been applied to the neighbourhood in early Maori times. It is used to designate a railway siding on the main line about a | mile south of the Whangarei station.

According to the information department of the Society of British Aircraft Constructors, it should be possible to begin an air service across the Tasman almost as soon as the route to Sydney has been established. “There is no technical reason why the airmail service to New Zealand, bringing the most distant Dominion within 10 days of London, should not be opened | very shortly after the seaplanes begin | to fly regularly through to Sydney,” 1 states its bulletin. “No new problems are involved, and the range needed I for the Tasman crossing is easily | within the capacity of the Empire I boats modified only by the installs- j 1 tion of extra fuel tanks.”
