TEMUKA
POPULARITY OF GYMKHANAS
PROVISIONS OF ACT EXPLAINED
In view of the popularity of gymkhanas in the Temuka district and the restrictions imposed by the law on horse events, the provisions of the Race Meetings Act, 1909, should prove of interest to local people.
Under the Act horse racing may not be legally promoted unless conducted under the authority and control of a club, association or other body, incorporated or unincomporated, established for the purpose of promoting, conducting or controlling the sport and duly authorised by license from the Minister for linternal Affairs. This applies equally in the case of hunt or polo clubs which may wish to hold race meetings. In an interview yesterday Sergeant M. E. Hill stated that a Supreme Court decision established that any variation in a race, such as a walk, trot and gallop, did not legalise the event. The Act provided for a fine of £5O or imprisonment for three months in the case of a person convicted of permitting, authorising or conducting an unlicensed race meeting and persons taking part in such a meeting, as a spectator or otherwise, were also liable for those penalties. Proceedings by way of arrest without warrant were provided for in the legislation. R.S.A. REUNION One of the most successful reunions yet held by the Temuka Returned Soldiers’ Association was that which marked the Association’s half year and which was held in the Labour Hall on Thursday evening. Beck, resident engineer of the Public Works Department, is at present visiting Hawke’s Bay in connection with a survey into the possibility of developing irrigation. Mr A. D. Todd, of the Public Works staff, Temuka, is at present on temporary transfer to Wellington.
