GOOD FAST BOWLER

PARSLOE PRAISED When the New Zealand team left for England they considered that their batting was their strong point, and their, bowling their weak one, but, according to members of the side, things turned out differently. Although six members of the side scored more than 1000 runs, they consider that it was their bowling that proved their strongest point. If what we saw in the match against Victoria is any indication it locks as though the bowling would have been stronger still had C. K. Parsloe been in the side, as some consider should have been the case. Parsloe is playing here because J. A. Dunning could not spare the time to visit Australia, says an Australian writer. He was sent over from New Zealand specially to take Dunning’s place. Seeing Parsloe in action one was reminded forcibly of Bill O’Reilly. He, of course, is a fast bowler, whereas O’Reilly is medium-pace, but in his bowling run up. and in his appearance from outside the fence, he is somewhat like the famous New South Welshman, although not quite so tall. He impressed all, however, as a remarkably fine bowler. Although not a real express, he gets great pace, keeps better length and direction Ihan most fast bowlers, and was able to make the ball nip off the pitch very fast, and sometimes to “lift” in a way that made him very awkward to handle. Powerfully built, he was very energetic in all that he did, and looks like a man who could last through long spells of bowling. His run is not so long as that of many fast bowlers, but he brings his arm well over in delivery. Parsloe is one of the many members of this New Zealand team who wear spectacles on the field.

Cowie, who was much the most successful of the New Zealand bowlers in England, was unable to play in this game, because of a strain, but Vivian, a left-hander with both bat and ball, gave Parsloe excellent help, as did Moloney, a slow spin bowler. Vivian, who opened the batting in each innings, has an attractive style as a batsman, and bowls with an easy action that enables him to keep going for long stretches. A feature of his bowling is his accuracy, which kept the batsmen well on the defensive all the time, and he appears to get spin which makes the ball nip off the wicket quickly.
