“Oh, dear!" sighs Mike, “what can we do to make it start to rain? Our country friends are all so thin they fill my heart with pain. Selina Sheep’s so lank and lean that she can scarcely walk, While Celia Cow has grown so sad she will not even talk I”

“I've heard,” says Horace Hare, “that If you fire guns in the sky. That often helps to bring the rain." “All right,” says Mike, “let’s try!” They make a fearsome cannon, and they work with might and main. “Ha! Ha!” cries Mike, “when this is fired ’twill surely bring the rain.”

The lazy Rain Elves overhear and sob and shake with fright. “Oh dear!” one cries, “if that gun’s fired we’ll be in sorry plight! Come, brothers, let us bring the X. rain before the cannon’s finished, For then the .isk of being hit, I think, will be diminished.”

Just as the mighty cannon’s made, o’erhead dark rain clouds form. “Oh, look!” cries Mike, “at last, at last, I think we'll have a storm! Let’s fire it anyway!” he yells, and dances in th- rain. —But as he speaks a lightning flash has rent the ■ gun in twain!
