BOWLING VISIT

THE BRITISH TEAM On its way to the Empire Games, a team of British bowlers is to tour New Zealand. Comprised of nineteen men and sixteen women, the party leaves Southampton on October 29 by the Arawa. It will arrive in Wellington on December 2, and will travel first in the South Island as far as Dunedin, and then In the North as far as Auckland before leaving for Sydney from Wellington on January 11. The team Is composed of first class players, all of whom were first nominated by their counties and finally selected by the English bowling Association. Four of its members have already been selected to represent England at the Empire Games, and a fifth will be picked on form when the team reaches Australia. Another member will represent Ireland, and it is likely that the team will also be relied upon for a Scottish representative. Travelling with the party will be Mr J. G. Cuthbert (Wembley and London Scottish), who hus been appointed vicecaptain of the English team at the Empire Games. The captain, Mr R. Weeks (Somerset), will not be travelling to New Zealand. He leaves for Australia direct in December. The personnel of the party is:—Mr and Mrs J. G. Cuthbert, Mr and Mrs J. J. Smith (Leicester), Mr and Mrs T. C. C. Angel (Penarth. South Wales), Mr E. Shuttle (Reading), Mr and Mrs E. How (Cheltenhar.i), Mr. and Mrs E. Tappenden (Kitchen, Herts), Mr W. Clarke (Belfast), Mr G. Hiscock (Fulham), Mr R. Baines and Miss H. P. Brines (Belfast). Mr and Mrs G. E. Gardiner (Belfast), Mr and Mrs F. James (Bel'ast). Mrs M. A. Mowbray and Miss Robinson (Morecambe). Mr S. .'ones (Croydon), Mr and Mrs C. T. Marcon (Bracknell. Herts), Mr and Mrs J. B. McAlpine (Glasgow), Mr R. S. Brown (Gerrards Cross. Bucks, and London Scottish). The English rink for the Empire Games wilt be Mr Cuthbert, Mr Shuttle, and Mr Tappenden. and one other yet to be selected. den is vice-president of the Hertfordshire Bowling Association. Mr Jones, who is one of the best-known tournament players in England, will partner Mr Weeks in the pairs for England at the Empire Games. Noted American Skip Three of the party—Mr Smith, Mr Templeton, and Mr Marcon—recently accompanied Mr Brown, who will act as manager and secretary, to Florida on a bowling tour, when Mr Smith and Mr Marcon were runners-up with their rink in the winter national tournnament of the American Lawn Bowling Association at St Petersburg. Mr Brown reached the semi-finals of the pairs of the same tournament. Incidentally, Mr Reed, who is an American, is accompanying the team since he is a member of an English club, Gerrards Cross. He is recognised as one of the best-known skips in the American Lawn Bowling Association, and it is said that there is not a man in the States who can exceed his record of major prizes. The Irish representative at the Empire Games will be Mr Clarke, who is to play in the singles. Another interesting personality is Mr Gardiner, who is the immediate past chairman of the Irish Bowling Association. The party sails from Southampton on the Arawa on October 29, and is due at Wellington on December 2, where it will make its headquarters the Grand Hotel. Five days will be spent at Wellington, and the party proceeds to Christchurch on December 7. The remainder of the itinerary is: —Timaru. December 11; Mount Cook, December 13; Queenstown, December 15 to 17; Dunedin, December 19 to 21; Napier, December 23; Rotorua, December 25 to 31; Auckland, January 2 to 4; tour of the west coast of the North Island to Wellington, January 5 to 11; sail from Wellington for Sydney January 11. The tour Is naturally being anticipated with the greatest enthusiasm. Several of the team have New Zealand acquaintances, while others have relations in the Dominion A team captain will probably be appointed during the voyage. Details of the tour in New Zealand have been arranged by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department. Mr Brown said that he had received every assistance possible from the London representative, Mr G. D. Llshman. “It is greatly due to his good work that the whole tour to New Zealand has been made possible,” he said.
