When two falls occurred in the Progressive Handicap at Forbury it looked as if there might have been something wrong with the footing, but this idea was dispelled when in the next race Big Author recorded 4.19. and Renown's Best later went 3.16 4-5, both being track records. Southern Chief’s 2.57 4-5 in the Spring Handicap equalled the previous best Forbury time for eleven furlongs. Stirling Lady, Big Author and Casanova all began slowly in the President’s Handicap at Forbury, but in spite of the hot pace set by Chenwood. the two first-named gradually made up leeway. Rongomai was first away, but was soon supplanted by Chenwood, who went on from Rongomai, Plutus and Southern Smile. Commencing the deciding round Chenwood was still in command from Stirling Lady, Rongomai, Big Author, Southern Smile and Plutus, but he then retired in favour of Stirling Lady, Big Author, Southern Smile and Plutus. Two furlongs from home Big Author was leading from Stirling Lady, Plutus and Southern Smile. Big Author led Plutus and Southern Smile to the straight, and outstayed them to win decisively from the favourite (Plutus), who was well clear of Southern S. lie. Sea Gift trotted up to her best form, but was not capable of going with Big Author, to do which she would have had to cut seconds off the record for an unhoppled performer.
