J. J. MEIKLE

DEATH ANNOUNCED By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, November 26. The death occurred at Dunedin yesterday of John James Meikle, aged 93. Meikle’s name had been frequently before the New Zealand public during the last 40 years. He was convicted at Invercargill in 1887 on a charge of sheep stealing and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment with hard labour. On his discharge he proceeded on a charge of perjury against a witness who had testified against him at the trial. The prosecution succeeded and the witness was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. Meikle then petitioned Parliament for compensation, and in 1897 was granted £5OO in full settlement of his claim. Since then Meikle at intervals unsuccessfully petitioned succeeding Governments for further compensation, and when the present Government came into office he again by petition urged his claim.
