HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING ROUTINE BUSINESS The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board was held yesterday. Presento-Messrs W. T. Ritchie (Chairman), T. B. Garrick, F. R. Flatman, D. C. Turnbull, A. G. Foster, R. 8. Goodman, A. F. Campbell, H. M. Whatman, W. Lindsay and D. C. Kidd. Financial Position The financial statement shewed that the debit balance at the last meeting was £5159/12/1. Receipts since then amounted to £1629/19/-, leaving a debit of £3529/13/1. Receipts up to November 22 reduced the debit at that date to £ll5B/16/9, plus £lOOO on temporary loan, leaving a total debit at November 22 of £2158/16/9. At the corresponding period last year the debit was £2230/16/4. The chairman said that the position was slightly worse than at the corresponding period last year, but this was largely due to loan work which ‘ had been carried on in the meantime. When the loan was authorised, this money would be recouped. The trade and revenue for October was down coi.ipared with October of last .year, butthe position varied from month to month. ■ • • ► Applications Declined Applications were received from the: Timaru Technical College, South Can-, terbury Chamber of Commerce'and . the Far East Relief Fund fpr donations. The chairman .said that in . the light' of changed conditions ,and the fast that new awards Would post the Board an additional .£l9OO a year,., he thought that the time had arrived when they should consider the position in regard to all applications for donations. The Chamber of Commerce certainly had the interests of the harbour at heart, but the Board was a member of the Chamber. The only body in which they were directly interested was the Sailors’ Rest, and he felt that the annual donation to the Rest should be continued.

In reply to a question, the secretary stated that grants annually totalled £6O. Mr Campbell said that th” sum was not a very large one, and he did not think they should pass a resolution cutting out all grants. After brief discussion, it was decided to decline the three applications before the meeting. Reclamation Ground A letter was received from the Timaru Borough Council suggesting that the area at the Bay and of the Marine Parade might be cleaned up. The chairman said that the Standing Committee had considered the matter, and had decided that no action be taken in the meantime, as the land would be required In connection with the proposed harbour improvements. The committee’s decision was confirmed. \ Strathailan Hall The Standing Committee recommended that the Srathallan Hall Committee be advised that as from January 1 the committee would have to be responsible for the payment of the caretaker’s wages. The chairman said that the payment of the caretaker’s wages by the Board was a war-time measure, and the time had arrived when the committee would have to take over the responsibility. The recommendation was adopted. Amalgamation Scheme A copy of the local bodies’ amalgamation scheme was received by the Board, and the Standing Committee expressed the opinion that It did not appear as though the Board would be affected. Mr Flatman advised the Board not to take any action in the meantime, and this course was agreed to. Holidays on Dredge The question of holidays for the staff of the dredge was discussed, and it was decided that the dredge be laid up for two weeks as from December 24, the men to take their annual leave as from this date. Those who have already had their leave will be transferred temporarily to the engineer’s and harbourmaster's staffs.
