SERVICES ON THE BAY

To the Editor of “ The Tlmaru Herald “ Sir—l have read with interest the report of the Council's discussion it the meeting of the Timaru Borough Council in reference to the use of the Sound Shell. In order to make the position clear as far as the Y.M.C.A. is concerned, may I say that when I wrote to the Council for permission to use the Sound Shell on the 14th Inst, at 8.30 a.m., I did so at the request of numerous ratepayers who desired to take part in our service. Many of those who attended our services in 1038 were elderly and had walked some considerable distance, the advantage to them, of a seat Is obvious, this I explained in my letter to the Council. Again with regard to the two Sunday afternoon services held some months ago, these were organised by my Association and the local Ministers’ Association at the request of your own ratepayers. The Y.M.C.A. is here to serve the public in any way it can. In neither of the cases mentioned has this Association received any financial gain nor undue publicity. In fact the expenses of the meetings were met by the Y.M.O.A. and the Ministers’ Association. May I express to Councillor Kinsman the sincere thanks of our people for his very gallant effort to make it possible for the people of Timaru to use this very valuable property.—l am, etc., H. J. HARRIS, General Secretary. Y.M.C.A., Timaru, November 23.
