HIGH SCHOOL BOARD EXTRA CLASSROOMS An early start is to be made on the building of extra classrooms at the Waimate High School, and it is hoped to have the added accommodation available for the opening of the school next year, reported the rector (Mr M. Leadbetter) to a meeting of the High School Board of Governors on Wednesday evening. Recommendations by the rector to apply for further facilities were approved by the Board. They were the building of a further cycle shelter, extra accommodation for hanging coats and hats, with a lead from the hot water pipes through the coat racks to dry the clothing during wet weather, and the installation of an automatic stoker. Present at the meeting were Messrs S. I. Fitch (chairman), C. G. Holmes, G. W. Collett, H. M. Whatman, T. E. Parry and J. C. Hay. The present roll number was 159, reported the rector. The roll a year ago was 152. With the large sixth standard in the primary school this year it was probable that the roll would top the 200 mark next year entitling the school to another D grade assistant teacher. The secondary school inspectors visited the school on October 29, mainly in connection with the award of Senior Free Places, and two were awarded extensions of Junior Free Places. Ten pupils were awarded higher leaving certificates. Opportunity was taken to discuss with Mr Caradus (acting chief inspector) the position of the evening classes in shorthand and typewriting, with a view to having these officially recognised by the Education Department. An early investigation into the posible demand for other evening classes in such subjects as English, arithmetic, accountancy, dressmaking, cookery, etc., was to be carried out, and classes in these subjects might be started if sufficient numbers were forthcoming. Thanks were due to Mr D. Newall for the presentation of a challenge rose bowl with a miniature, this going to a character speech contest; also to the Veitch brothers for the presentation of a cup for the 100 yards senior championship; to Mrs Stewart Mills for the presentation of a cup to be awarded to a senior boy, mainly for character and leadership; to Mrs L. V. Brenton for a special prize for the best Latin scholar; also for the gift of see-’- or seedlings from Mrs Partridge, Mr Hayes, and the following pupils of the school: J. Watson, J. Kirk, N. Wright. D. Adams, L. Adams, E. Leach, M. Anderson, L. Meyer, M. Dunstan; finally to two more pupils of the school, B. Gynes and N. Wright, for the gift of cake tins. The report was adopted. The Rector suggested that as the Department had not approved a scheme of its own for the hire of text kooks, the Board should institute a scheme of its own with the £6O authorised for the purchase ol new books. Members commented favourably -n the suggestion, and it was agreed to defer consideration to a later meeting. It was resolved that the break-up ceremony be held ci December 17.

The secretary reported that the prize fund was about £l4. The need for a rec’or’s residence and also fcr a school hostel was raised by Mr Holmes. The chairman said that corrcipondence had passed between the Board and the authorities on the subject, but no decision had been reached. He suggested that the matter be taken up again next year.
