AIR AND SEA TERMINAL

PREFERENCE FOR WELLINGTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The Council of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at a meeting last night decided to support a request by the Wellington Chamber to have the capital city made the New Zealand terminal of trans-Tasman and trans-Paciflc air and sea routes. Present: Messrs W. M. Sexton (president), H. Miller, F. Chittock, C. J. Williams, A. M. Parker, J. Anstey, J. C. Kay, J. Scholefield, C. B. Marshall, C. E. Thomson, W. I. Tait, R. S. Goodman, G. H. Andrews, J. M. Jenkins, H. Gould. “I think it is very necessary that the airliners should arrive at the centre of New Zealand,” said the president (Mr W. M. Sexton). “With them arriving at Auckland there would be a time lag which will affect the mails.” He moved that the request of the Wellington Chamber be supported. The motion was seconded by Mr F. Chittock. In reply to Mr J. M. Jenkins, the president said no effort had been made to have a South Island centre made the terminal. “Assuming that there is no prospect of the South Island being considered, I will support the motion,’’ said Mr Jenkins, “but if any South Island centre can lay claim to being the terminal I would prefer to support that instead of Wellington.” The president said that, as far as na knew, no claim had been made by the South Island. It was mentioned by Mr A. M. Parker that Christchurch had decided to support the Wellington Chamber's request. The motion was carried. Road to Goods Sheds The Transport Committee reported that in spite of the fact that the Railways Department had advised the Chamber that it had no intention of affecting permanent repairs to the goods sheds road, the committee considered that the matter was one which should not be allowed to drop. The census now being taken would reveal the volume of traffic which passed over the road, and it was no wonder that temporary repairs were so Ineffective. The road was not in good condition, and in its present state must cause a considerable amount of annoyance and possibly damage to the transport vehicles of the commercial community. The report was adopted.

Success of Conference The president referred to the success of the recent conference of Associated Chambers of Commerce, stating that at the conclusion of the business he had been amazed at the manner in which delegates had expressed their gratification at the excellence of the arrangements made. The success had been due to the team work of all members of the Council for whose support he was grateful. A motion of thanks was accorded the president for the manner in which he had discharged his duties as president of the host Chamber. A number of congratulatory messages were read from other Chambers regarding the success of the conference it being stated that a new standard of hospitality had been set. Complimentary reference was made to the efficiency with which the secretary (Mr F. J. Cook) had discharged his duties and a motion of appreciation was accorded him.
