BOWLING

NORTH ISLAND TOUR PERSONNEL OF PARTY (By "Toucher") Saturday saw the second round of the Bristol Cup played. There were no surprises, except that the winning teams won by a greater margin than I expected, especially in the case of Walmate v. Geraldine and West End v. Ashbury. Walmate had the best win of the day, defeating their opponents by over 100 points. Evidently they are going to be hard to beat in this competition, although they will have a pretty stiff proposition next round when they meet Timaru, who had a fairly easy win over Temuka by 50 points. Highfleld did very well to get within 44 points of Kia Toa, who had a fairly strong team out for the day. Temuka had hard luck last Saturday losing the services as “skip” of Tom Edwards. Tom is always a hard man to beat, and although he played lead for his old team mate Wallie McCallum, naturally he was not so effective in that position. We trust that his health will soon permit him to fill his old position, as he is one of those bowlers whom the district can ill afford to lose. West End In Form West End were too good fdr Ashbury, winning by 32 points, six of their rinks being up and two down. F. Spring's rink had a good win against R. G. Sampson, who had a good rink on paper, but I understand the run of the play went against him on two or three occasions when he drove to take “kitty” through, but rebounding off back bowls left his apponents lying. However, that is always on. N. Hamlyn also had a good game with Tom Currie, Just managing to get home by two shots. J. Gunn, the president, did well to beat E. Darroch by a fair margin. Johnny lost touch last year, but seems to be back to his old form again. North Island Tour

Arrangements are practically completed for the contemplated tour of the North Island by a party of South Canterbury bowlers. The party leave Timaru on New Year’s Day, arriving in Wellington on the morning of January 2. They leave after breakfast for Hastings, arriving there for tea on January 3. They play the Hawke’s Bay Centre at Napier, leaving Hastings on the morning of January 4 for Gisborne, where they arrive that evening. On January 5 they play Gisborne and East Coast Centre, and on January 6 they leave for Tauranga, having lunch at Opotiki and playing there in the afternoon, arriving in Tauranga that night. On January 7 they play at Tauranga, leaving on the morning of January 8 for Rotorua, arriving there for lunch. From then till Monday, January 10, will be spent in sightseeing. No bowls will be played at Rotorua.

The party will then leave for Waitomo Caves, spending an hour at “Arapunl” on the way and reaching Waitomo that night. Next morning they leave for New Plymouth, arriving there for lunch and playing the Taranaki Centre on January 12. They then leave for Wanganui on January 13, playing there the same day. Leaving the next morning for Palmerston North, they play there in the afternoon against the Manawatu Centre; and leaving Palmerston North for Wellington on Saturday, January 15, play there in the afternoon, catching the boat the same night for home. The trip will be done in two of the new railway buses, and should be very enjoyable, passing as It does through some of the finest scenic roads In New Zealand. The route between Gisborne and Opotiki is particularly interesting from a historic point of view, it being one of the earliest settled districts in New Zealand.

The party will comprise 27 men bowlers and nine ladies, a fair number of whom also play bowls and croquet, and games have been arranged for them In the various centres. For a touring team the rinks will be fairly strong, and should give a good account of themselves. However, that Is a secondary consideration, as after all playing bowls is only an excuse for making the trip, the real reason being to see new territory, meet old friends and make new ones.

The following Is the personnel of the party:—President, Mr C. W. Wood; organiser and manager, Mr J. Moyes; treasurer, Mr C. E. Torlesse; Mr and Mrs J. R. Bruce, Mr and Mrs T. Currie, Mr and Mrs C. H. Manning, Mr and Mrs E. Scales, Mr and Mrs H. Carlton, Mr and Mrs J. Caskey, Mr and Mrs Geo. Richardson, Mrs J. Moyes, Mrs C. E. Torlesse. Messrs F. J. Dunn, T. D. Urquhart, J. Anderson, J. Menzies, D. Menzies, T. S. Bussell, W. W. Smith, H. Butler, D. Gibson, F. H. Joynt, G. McKitterick, C. Lund, A. Berry, T. Stevens, A. Oborn, A. R. Beck, and another. There is only one seat available, but this will no doubt be filled during the next few days.
