J. Smith, the ex-Otago representative, was in good form for Timaru against Geraldine on Saturday. He and Gould turned the ball effectively on a suitable wicket, while Smith gave

a taste of his batting ability with 26 not out. He produced a variety of shots and should be a decided acquisition to the game in South Canterbury.

On the opening day of the TimaruGeraldine match Timaru’s fielding tor a young side was very disappointing. They lost about six chances before the afternoon tea adojurnment. Last Saturday, however, there was a marked improvement and R. Wilson, fielding near the leg boundary, took one of the finest catches seen on the ground. Seven of the Geraldine batsmen were dismissed as a result of good catching.

F. Stack and J. Stone-Wlgg were again the mainstay of the Geraldine batsmen on Saturday. Stack, who is a good all-rounder, scored 39 in good style, while Stone-Wigg assisted the total with 24. Geraldine has some promising talent but the slow bowling last Saturday proved too tempting.

Owing to the Temuka ground not being available, the third grade match, Walmataltal and Temuka, has been transferred to School Park No. 3. Messrs F. Foster and P. Mahoney have been appointed umpires.
