James M. Bertram, ex-Rhodes Scholar from the Waltakl Boys’ High School, has achieved literary success in a recent publication “The Crisis in China.” Mr Bertram, who was holding a Rhodes Trust Fellowship at Pekin University when the war broke out, has been acting as war correspondent for a London newspaper. Mr Bertram was dux of the Waltakl Boys’ High School, and had a brilliant career in the New Zealand University and at Oxford, where he took first class honours in English. His book has been favourably reviewed by the London “Times.' A treasure hunt has been started for Arizona’s legendary “mine with an iron door" where £18,000.000 of gold is reported to have been hidden four hundred years ago. Nathan Sturdy, a Pittsburgh .nining engineer and member of the Smithsonian Institute, who will lead the search, has authenticated maps and charts revealing that Spanish missionaries accumulated 2,500.000 ounces of gold from Indian miners which they stored behind an iron door in an Escalante mine. Several unsuccessful quests were made In the last century, but Sturdy says all the maps point to one mountain as the spot to search. He plans to remove tons of fallen rocks under which he is convinced he will find the golden treasure. Securing fresh material Is the problem that theatrical managers are finding hard to solve. This was the opinion of Mr F. J. Smith (chairman of the recent annual meeting of Messrs J. C. Williamson and Co., Ltd. Recently, however, he said, the company had been fortunate in acquiring new plays, such as “Balalaika,” “Over She Goes,” and “Victoria Regina," all of which were proving successes, and the indications were that they would continue to be successful for some time to come. One of the most gratifying features, he added, was a strong revival of interest to the spoken drama. A flood of resolutions from various sources has been directed to the Government in an effort to stamp out the evil of abortion since the publication on April 12 of the Maternity Services Investigation Committee. Leaders of churches in Auckland have prepared a joint appeal to the Government, urging it to take Immediate steps to set matters right. The signatories also urge that the Government should deal with certain provocative causes, such as the sale of salacious literature, and the use of liquor at and In the vicinity of public dances. The resolutions are signed by representatives of almost every denomination in Auckland.
