PARLIAMENT
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, November 24. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. The Dunedin District Drainage and Sewerage Amendment Bill, the Timaru Harbour Board Loan Amendment Bill, the Christchurch Tramway Board Empowering Bill and the Whangarei Airport Bill were each read a second time. When the second reading of the Sale of Wool BUI was taken, the Hon. J. E. Duncan made his maiden speech. He referred to the value of the pastoral industry, and said that there was a necessity for more research work to assist the wool industry. Good work was being done at Massey College in certain lines, but there were other problems confronting wool growers that could be tackled. Noxious weeds was one of these and he considered it would be to the advantage of the nation if the Government made larger grants for entomological research, so that parasites inimical to noxious weeds could be secured. The second reading of the Coal Mines Amendment Bill was moved by the Leader of the Council the Hon. M. Fagan, who paid a tribute to the Minister of Mines and then discussed the provisions of the measure. After the Hon. E. Dye and the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre had spoken on the problems of the mining industry covered by the clauses of the Bill, the iebate was adjourned and the Council rose.
