BOXING TROPHIES PRESENTED SEASON CONCLUDED With the presentation of trophies by Mr C. J. Talbot at a social function on Tuesday night, the Fairlie Boxing Club’s first season concluded. Mr Talbot complimented the club on its activities and said boxing enthusiasts in Fairlie seemed to owe a debt of gratitude to the South Canterbury Boxing Association for its interest and assistance. The last tournament had been made very interesting by the visit of Timaru competitors. He remarked on the number of sports organisations that now existed in Fairlie, and said it was all to the good, because only a few days before he had heard that New Zealand had a population of C 3 people, about the lowest physical grade there was. Recipients of miniature cups were: Noel Whitehead, Frank Surridge, H. Gibson and E. Bloxham. A special trophy for merit was awarded to Bryan Edwards. The evening’s entertainment opened with games of euchre, and the prizewinners were: Mrs J. E. Miles 1, Mrs Elsom 2, Miss M. J. Lunham 3; Mr West Howe 1, Mr E. Doyle 2, Mr Stringer 3. For a dance, Mr W. Ellem was master of ceremonies, and music was supplied by Mrs D. Annan, Miss D. Annan and Mr S. Braddick. A Monte Carlo waltzing competition was won by Miss P. Lunham and Mr P. Hanifin. CYCLE AND ATHLETIC CLUB At the weekly meeting of the executive of the Fairlie Cycle and Athletic Club on Tuesday night, those present were: Messrs J. Macdonald (president), R. McC. Fergusson, G. Dunn, F. M. Geaney, A. Pryde, D. Cuthill, W. L. Bourn, R. J. Creighton, A. H. Saunders and E. B. Taylor (secretary). For the unofficial swimming carnival next week, the following programme was arranged: 25 and 50 yards (men) free style; 25 and 50 yards (women) free style; relay race, man and woman; open diving; novelty balloon race. Two children’s events are to be arranged by the headmaster of the Fairlie District High School (Mr B. F. Hayman). An alternative post entry athletic programme was drawn up in case the weather is unsatisfactory. In connection with heats in cycle track rates, it was decided that in the case of two heats, three riders could qualify, and when there were three or more heats, two could qualify. Championship points for the Clayton Challenge Cup, which is awarded for cycling, are as follows: V. Wall 9, J. Dixon 7, A. H. Carlton, B. Whyte and R. Hammond. 5, H. Patton, E. Allan and E. B. Taylor 4, J. Hannigan, G. Metcalf and T. Cook 3, C. Surridge 2, D. O’Reilly, R. Cook and G. Siegert 1. V. Dobson leads for most points in running, with 9, and others are: R. Ellis 6, A. Crampton 5, J. Keenan 4, H. B. Breach and W. Cordes 3, C. Surridge and F. O’Connor 2, A. Kane and E. H. Lee 1.

AMATEUR ATHLETICS For the Fairlie Amateur Athletic Club’s five and a-half mile cross country race to be held this evening, the handicaps are: T. Shivas, G. Gillon and A. H. Williams (Timaru) scr; H. Brown (Timaru) 30sec; C. Parrant and F. Caldwell (Temuka), A. Bateman and E. Crichton Imin; G. Shaw and R. Allan 2min; G. Adamson, H. Gibson, J. Breen, A. Caldwell and W. Caldwell 3min; M. Sims, J. Cartwright and C. Riddle 4min; Woodward, B. O’Neill, L. Kane, L. Cordes, K. Tubb and C. Dale smin. PERSONAL Mr H. B. Breach, of the Fairlie Post Office staff, has been transferred to Cheviot. At a meeting of the Fairlie Cycle and Athletic Club on Tuesday night, a motion of appreciation of Mr Breach’s interest in the club’s activities was carried unanimously. Mrs J. S. Satterthwaite, Wai-iti Road, Timaru, is the guest of her sister, Mrs W. Simpson, Mount Nessing. Miss A. Mackenzie, Mt. Nessing, paid a short visit to Dunedin during the week-end. Mrs F. Noster, Edward Street, Timaru, accompanied by her two small sons, is spending a short holiday with Mrs A. B. Irving, Mt. Nessing. MOUNT NESSING Although the rain that fell last week was very welcome, a further fall is really needed, as the nor’-westers which followed marred the beneficial effects obtained. Farmers are busy with the sowing of rape and turnips. That work was delayed owing to the dry state of the ground. Mr E. Cholerton.
