NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL The movement for the establishment of an Australian National University at Canberra, the Capital of the Commonwealth, has received a powerful impetus from the decision of the Australian General Synod of. the Church of England to urge upon the Government the need for Its inauguration. The Synod considered that the National University should be devoted primarily to historical, international and other cultural subjects with the object of making it the cultural centre of Australia. This is in accord with the principles guiding the existing movement for a Canberra University. Canberra is Ideally situated for a National University. Apart from the tranquil atmosphere which is conducive to study, certain facilities exist for the special study of public administration, international affairs and other

branches. The Australian National Library, the Australian Institute of Anatomy, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, and a University College providing lectures In Arts, Science, Commerce and Law, are established In the Federal City.
