A LOW AVERAGE
WAGES OF BUILDERS LABOURERS By Telegraph—Presy Association AUCKLAND. November 23. Supporting the claims of the Auckland Builders, General and other Labourers’ Union for an award before Mr Justice O'Regan in the Arbitration Court to-day, the general secretary of the union, Mr T. Stanley, sa I .' that the total value of all building operations during 1935 36 was £5.929.803. compared with £3,643.688 in the previous year. Measured in terms of value of annual production, the third largest industry in New Zealand was the building and construction industry. It was of vital importance and consequently owed something to the workers engaged in it. It was to be regrettea, however, that the industry was one o* the most callous in the country, particularly in regard to wages. The woi leers were engaged on an hourly basis and had no sense of security. The average builder's labourer, taking the year as a whole, did not average more than £3 a week.
