FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY
STATEMENT BY MINISTER By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, November 23. "After talking over with its representatives the position facing the boot manufacturing industry, I promised that I would discuss matters with other members of the Cabinet to see if an announcement of the Government’s intentions to help the industry could not be expedited," said the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong today. Booth manufacturers were concerned with the likelihood of having to put off further operatives, he added. They felt that many operatives dismissed would drift into other avenues of employment, and that when trade revived again their skilled services would be lost to the industry. If the industry knew definitely the Government’s intentions it could plan ahead, and by adding to stocks to meet the demand when normal conditions returned it could retain the services of men who otherwise might have to be dismissed.
