PLEASANT POINT

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL The monthly meeting of the Pleasant Point District High School Committee was presided over by Mr R. Esler. There were present: Mrs W. T. Taylor, Mrs C. Cartwright, and Messrs W. Crawford, R. More, W. Halkett and Mr C. Gibb (headmaster). The headmaster in his report for the period ending November 8, stated that the attendance in the primary department was 207, with an average attendance of 191; and in the secondary department 60 with an average of 58. The school sports were held on Wednesday, October 27. Entries were good and the standard of school athletics was very high. It was hoped that a larger attendance of parents would in the future help to make the sports more attractive. Mr C. Romans, president of the Soutli Canterbury Primary School Sports Association attended and presented the trophies. The school was fully represented at the South Canterbury primary school sports meeting held in Timaru on November 5. The boys especially maintained a high standard, being placed in the majority of the events for which they entered. A proposal was on hand to inaugurate an annual sports meeting for the pupils of the secondary departments of the four South Canterbury District High Schools,‘the first meeting to take place before the closing of the schools in December. Part of the radio equipment ordered from the Department had come to hand. Arrangements for the installation of the set would require to be made. Arrangements were being made to conduct regular classes in swimming and life-saving. It was hoped to commence these at an early date.

Members of the committee expressed their thanks to Mr S. Gray of Timaru for the interest he had shown in the installation of the school radio, and for his very valuable advice. Mr Gray was an ex-pupil, and it was due to his r~orts that such up-to-date equipment had been secured. The sub-committee in charge of this work was empowered to proceed wit!: the wiring of the whole school for loud speakers. Mr Esler, visitor for the month, reported that several minor repairs had been waiting for some time. He mentioned that the pump had been giving considerable trouble, and was barely keeping .sufficient water in the tanks. The visitor for the present month was Mr W. Halkett, was instructed to have the pump attended to.

FAREWELL SOCIAL Ou Friday evening last a representative gathering of farmers and residents of the Pleasant Point district met to say farewell to Mr A. Waters and Mr S. King who are leaving the district. Mr F. Agnew was chairman of the gathering. Mr A. Agnew mentioned the popularity of both and on behalf of the Saleyards Company expressed appreciation for the way in which Mr King and Mr Waters had both worked in with them. Mr F. Simmonds said that, in common with the other stock agents, he had always found Mr Waters and Mr King very easy to work with and would regret their departure very much. Mr W. More, on behalf of the dealers said that he had been in close touch with both Mi Waters and Mr King,

and that he had formed a very high opinion of their abilities. Mr T. Kelliher in presenting each with a fountain pen, said that he had known their fathers and also their grandfathers and was well qualified to add his testimony to those of the preceding speakers. He wished both a prosperous and happy future. Mr Waters is returning to Fairlie. his home town, and Mr King is being transferred to the Cant' bury Farmers’ Co-operative Association at Geraldine.
