OLYMPIC CRACK TRAPPED IN BURNING BUILDING United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright ANNAPOLIS, November 21. Merle Webb, a Naval Academy boxing coach, who coached four Olympic Games teams, has narrowly escaped death. A large number of guests including 50 society sub-debutantes, who attended last night’s Midshipmen Ball, were driven from the rooms when a fire partially destroyed the historic Carvel Hall Hotel. The damage is estimated at 100,000 dollars. Firemen found Webb wandering inside, blinded with smoke, and unable to locate the exit after he had made an effort to recover 400 valuable trophies. He saved only a bronze statuette, a present from General Pershing, which he was carrying in his arms .when led out. Ten firemen were cut or bruised, and scores of youths aided the firemen, who recovered most of the girk’ luggage. The cause of the fire is not known.
