CALEDONIAN SOCIETY JUBILEE SPORTS MEETING ARRANGED The fiftieth annual meeting of the St. Andrews Caledonian Society was held on Monday evening, Mr S. F. Hanson presiding. The balance-sheet showed a debit of £3/18/-. This was due to the fact that the last sports meeting was cancelled at short notice and certain expenditure had already been made. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the balance-sheet thanked the grounds committees, the Timaru Highland Pipe Band and all who had assisted in connection with past meetings of the Society, especially the ladies who had assisted greatly with refreshment stalls on the grounds.

The motion was seconded by Mr M. O'Connor and carried unanimously. It was unanimously agreed to hold tile jubilee meeting on January 3. It W'as decided that Messrs H. O’Neill (Temuka) and G. Hopkins (Timaru) who have been valuable members of the Society during past years, be invited to attend the sports as the guests of the Society. The chairman reported that the Timaru Society was negotiating for Australian cyclists to visit South Canterbury at New Year. Every endeavour would be made for the cyclists to be present at the St. Andrews sports.

It was agreed that a boy’s cycling race be included on the programme. On the suggestion of the chairman it was decided to approach the Timaru Harmonica Band, asking if it could assist with the concert programme. A donation of a medal towards the dancing was received with thanks from Miss Ford.

On the suggestion of the secretary it was decided to form a sub-committee to go into the matter of arranging ar. inter-district tug-o-war cami—>l in conjunction with the Tennis Club. During the meeting members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with Mrs A. J. Munro and family in the death of Mr Munro who was one of the pioneer members nf the Society.

First Meeting of Society. Thanks to the courtesy of the “Timaru Herald" Company, through Mr J. Davey, the president, Mr R. W. Munro was able to trace the history of the society, which showed that the initial meeting was held on December 1, 1888. on the property of the Pareora Land Company, below where the St. Andrews Vicarage is situated at the present time. Two thousand people were present at the meeting which started at 10.30 a.m. and finished at 6 p.m. Office bearers were—Patrons, R. H. Rhodes, D. McLaren, T. Teschemaker; president, A. McPherson; vicepresidents. D. Sutherland, B. Bell, G. Lyall; secretary, J. Walker; handicapper, T. McAuliffe, of Salisbury. The competitors present included D. Shute. R. J. Bradley and A. Jones.

FUNCTION AT GORDON’S VALLEY A very pleasant afternoon was spent by the Bluecliffs Anglican Sunday School children, when they were entertained at a prize giving party given by Mr and Mrs P. A. Elworthy at Gordon’s Valley. The children spent part of the afternoon rambling through the bush at the back of the homestead, after which the prizes were presented by Mrs Hay. The Rev. J. Hay thanked Mr and Mrs Elworthy and Mrs Cocks for the interest they had taken in the children’s work.
