NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN

SOUTH CANTERBURY BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Branch of the National Council of Women of New Zealand, Mrs Kemshed presided. Miss Johnstone of the Y.W.C.A. wrote advising that the appointed delegate to New Zealand for peace would be in Timaru for two days in March, 1938. She is Miss Kathleen Courtney, secretary of the Woman’s International Peace and Disarmament Committee. After discussion with Miss Johnstone it was decided to call a meeting of all women's organisations in February to make arrangements for the visit. It was hoped that Geraldine and Waimate could be included. All affiliated societies were requested to write to the Minister in Charge of Police, expressing their approval of the appointment of women police.

A remit received from Hamilton was as follows: “That as the question of drinking in motor cars outside of dance halls, is causing anxiety to all who have the welfare of youth at heart and as most civic authorities are unwilling to intervene, the Government be urged to Inquire into the matter with a view to removing the evil.” The remit was discussed but while in sympathy the council failed to see what steps the Government could take. Mrs Holdgate, one of the delegate to the Auckland conference gave a most interesting account of the social entertainment engaged by the delegates. The Auckland Council had spared no trouble. Most interesting was the account of the visit to the Maori Pa at Ngaruarahia were they were entertained by Princess Te Pra, 0.8. E.

This being the last meeting for 1937, Mrs Kemshed wished the Council the compliments of the season.
