TEMUKA

SEASONAL WORK BEGINS UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES DECREASE Owing to seasonal work on farms about to commence, the number of men registering for relief at the Employment Bureau is dwindling. One hundred and nine men reported at the bureau yesterday, this number being several less than last week. Next week there will be several less men working on Number 5 Scheme in the Borough and Domain. Work was allocated for 33 men this week. Thirtyfive men are working on Number 13 Scheme In the Borough and Domain. Those who have been working at the golf links have completed the job and are now on the formation of footpaths in High Street and general Domain improvements. Five men are still working on t.he formation of the new tennis courts.

QUEEN CARNIVAL POSSIBILITIES SURVEYED An idea of what the return from a town and district queen carnival like the present effort could be, with efficient organisation and willing cooperative effort on the part of the contributing bodies, was given by Mr W. H. McMillan, when speaking at a recent meeting of those working in the Domain Board’s queen’s interests. The last district effort had been made in 1925, Mr McMillan said, and although the time at the disposal of the organisers was only a month the gross proceeds, including those from a gala and the crowning ceremony on Boxing Day, were £lOOO. There were four queens, these being the Caledonian Society (Miss E. Macaulay), Domain Board (Miss Rene Gunnion), Fire Brigade (Miss J. Hlgginbottom) and W.C.T.U., Plunket Society and Milford Lagoon Association (Miss Cameron), and in the final count of votes the candidates finished In that order. More than 94,000 votes were cast and they realised £745. Mr McMillan said that with enthusiastic organisation it would be possible to make the present queen carnival just as successful. Practically all the forms of organisation employed In 1925 were again being used and enthusiastic support was all that was required. In the present campaign all the queens, that is the Domain, Caledonian and Basketball candidates, have already each occupied the leading position on the flagpole at the Crown Hotel corner, indicating that efforts are being made by all the committees to secure th? lead. Inquiries made yesterday elicited the fact that the Domain Board intended spending its portion of the proceeds on the building of a glass house for the Domain, but that the other bodies had not yet decided on the object to which their funds would be devoted.
