BAY CROSSING

PROPOSAL TO CLOSE ENTRANCE In spite of a warning notice, pedestrians continue to use the gap in the centre of the fence, shutting off the pavement at the Bay Viaduct from the street, and the barricade is not serving the purpose for which it was intended, according to a report presented to a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night. Recommending that the gap be closed, Traffic Inspector O. H. Newcome said the fence was erected to prevent pedestrians from spreading across the intersection and confining them to pedestrian crossings placed on the roadway at each end. The present position was that the fence was not answering the purpose it was put there for. as pedestrians used the gap in spite of the notice erected, and spread across the roadway as was the case before the fence was erected. The bus stop which was at present opposite the gap, could be removed to a position south, just below the pedestrain crossing. That would not in any way inconvenience bus passengers; in fact it would be an added protection to passengers wishing to cross ths intersection as they would have the protection of the recognised crossing. Cr. J. R. Hart emphasised the danger created by pedestrians emerging from the gap and also crossing from the other side of the street to the entrance. It was proposed to make the bus stop at the south end of the fence as it was not practicable to have it at the north end, there being insufficient room for buses coming dowm Wai-iti Road to get round to the stop. The matter was referred to the Omnibus Committee for favourable consideration.
