TEMUKA

STATE HOUSING SCHEME

EXTENSION TO THE BOROUGH

Satisfaction with the Government’s action in advertising the tenders for the erection of 10 houses in Temuka under the State Housing Scheme ana appreciation of the consideration given to the town were expressed by the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan).

"The housing shortage has been acute in Temuka for some time,” said the Mayor. “It will be somewhat relieved when the Government’s scheme to build 10 houses is completed. The Government are to be commended for their prompt action in getting the scheme into operation with so little delay.”

“Apart from the benefits so far as housing is concerned there will be distinct advantages to the borough in several ways. The sections on which the

houses are to be built have never been of much value to the Council from a revenue-producing point of view but they will now return their share to the borough finances. The whole scheme will be situated in the sewerage area and served with all the necessary public services. The situation of the houses will Improve the general appearance of the locality and the town as a whole.”

Advice from the Ministry of Housing, received on Saturday, was to the effect that building would take place on Hamilton, Denmark, Wilkin ami other streets on the east side of the borough.

ATHLETICS INTER-CLUB MEETING HELD With the conditions overhead and underfoot most satisfactory, except for a south-easterly breeze, a good day’s sport was provided by the second interclub scratch meeting of the South Canterbury Athletic Sub-Cer.tre’s season, held in the Temuka domain on Saturday. Points gained by the competitors in the A grade counted for the inter-club competition, and the South Canterbury Club scored an outstanding win. However Temuka equalised by winning the second inter-club relay of a series for the Aitken Banner. There were no outstanding individual performances, although Miss S. Oliphant, starting off scratch in the final of the women's 100 yards, was beaten by inches in a race that was won in 11 3-ssec. Indeed she had a most successful day, securing a place in each of the women’s events. Generally the B grade provided a comparatively better standard of performance than the A, the time in the 880 yards being better and the performances in the other events being practically up to those of the higher grade. Competition was keen in the lower grade, too, there being 15 st-rt-ers in the half-mile while H the long jump eight competitors were within nine inches of one another. In the B grade three miles a splendid finish was staged by F. Walker and E. Wilson. They had been running well throughout the race and as they came round the track into the straight for the sprint to the tape it was seen that there was little between them. Each temporarily headed-off the other until well into the straight and then Walker came through with a great burst of speed and won. “ The meeting was conducted by the officials of the subcentre. Points in the inter-club c-m--petition were: South Canterbury JJ, Temuka 26, Geraldine 11. Results

“LOVE IS NEWS” Outromancing his brilliant role in “Lloyds of London,” Tyrone Pow?r plays a thrilling lead opposite fresh and lovely Loretta Young, who brings a new grace to a portrayal that is engagingly different, with Don Amechc, radio star of “The Frst Nighter.” outstanding in a vigorously exciting characterisation. Because he has just tricked her into another front-page story, heiress Loretta Young swears revenge on Tyrone Power, ace reporter for the New York Daily Express (managing editor, Don Ameche). Determined that he shall know just how it feels to be a newspaper “goldfish-in-a-bowl,” with as little privacy as he allowed her, Loretta announces to the papers that she is engaged to Tyrone, and adds that she has presented him with a million dollars. Riotously confusing and amusing, the story ascends to a stirring, madcap climax in which the widely publicised hoax becomes the private truth as the modern pair find themselves really in love.

Mr A. H. T. Rose, F.S.M.C., F. 1.0 London), representing Procter’s, the Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Temuka and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Temuka Hotel on Tuesday. November 23. Appointments can now be made by ring:ng the U.F.S. Dispensary, 'phone No > DM
