WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

EALING The monthly meeting of the Ealing Women's Institute was held in the hall when Mrs Mackenzie presided over a large attendance of members. Arrangements were made for a rose show in December.

A very interesting travel talk was given by Sister Adams, of Timaru, who described some of her experiences during her recent trip to the Coronation. She was accorded a vote of thanks.

The competitions resulted as follows: Single bloom: Mesdames Dorward and Donaldson; truss: Mrs Dorward. Shrub: Mrs Mackenzie. Bowl of flowers: Mrs Dorward. Matchbox competition: Mrs Dorward 1, Mrs South 2. The hostesses were Mrs Donaldson and Misses M. and I. Jones.

ORARI The Orarl Women’s Institute met in the hall on Thursday afternoon when Mrs S. Unwin presided. Two new members—Mrs Dallard and Miss Dallard were elected. Four interesting letters were read from Trumpington.

Mrs Seaward, London, was introduced and gave a most enlightening talk. She related the life of Kingsbury Fairbridge which then led up to her subject of the Kingsbury Fairbridge farm schools in Australia and Canada. She had photographs of the Western Australian school on view which proved most interesting. On the motion of Mrs D. LeCren the speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. The golden thread for the month took the form of a roll call, “Facts I know about women in other countries,” which brought forth some interesting facts. Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald gave an interesting report of the round table conference which she had attended.

The results of the competitions were. —Miniature blanc mange: Mrs F. Priddle. Madiera cake: Mrs W. Smith. Saucer of salad: Mrs W. Smith. Something new from something old: Miss R. Killoh 1, Mrs G Prattley and Mrs D. Bennett equal 2, Mrs W. Prattley ;■ Best bloom: Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald 1, Mrs Johnston 2, Mrs W. Smith 3.

The sales table in aid of the Burnett School scheme did good business.

MT. NESSING At the monthly meeting of the Mt. Nessing Women’s Institute, Mrs P. Kidd presided over a good attendance of members.

A most interesting letter describing a visit to the Mount Nessing Women’s Institute in England was received from Miss Austin.

The delegates to the half-yearly Federation meeting presented a comprehensive report. Mrs Winter then gave a most interesting talk and demonstration on the making of Christmas gifts. On the motion of Mrs Stevenson, a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. The competitions resulted as follows. —Wood fibre dog rose: Miss Brown 1 and 2, Miss Waters 3. Marmalade: Mrs Brown 1, Miss Brown 2, Mrs Waters 3. 21b jam jar of flowers: Mrs W. Simpson 1, Mrs P. Kidd 2, Mrs Muir 3. Misses K. and M. Fraser acted as hostesses and Miss Brown as pianiste.

SHERWOOD DOWNS The November meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, when Mrs M. B. Reid presided over a good attendance of members and friends. Visitors were present from Invercargill, Cheviot and Ashwick Flat.

Letters of congratulation on the success of the Institute, in the floral display at Pleasant Point, were received from Allandale and Fairlie Women's Institutes.

Mrs Carter was chosen as delegate to the meeting in Timaru regarding the training school for girls.

Mrs Ross gave the gardening notes for the month and answered many questions. Mrs Mackenzie continued the golden thread talks on famous women, her subject being Mrs Alfred Watt.

Arrangements for the Christmas party to be held at Mrs Gray’s residence were made, members being reminded to send a gift for the children, and to bring a sample plate. Mrs Reid asked Miss Maxine Whatman, whose marriage is to take place early next year, to accept a small gift from Institute members, Miss Whatman being the first member of the Institute to become a bride. She was also the recipient of a bouquet of flowers. Miss Whatman thanked Mrs Reid and fellow members for the gift and good wishes and said how happy she had always been at the meetings. Afternoon tea was served by the 1- stosses, Mesdames Armitage, Moorhead and Rayne. Community singing was followed by a very Interesting demonstration of Christmas cake icing by Mr J. Gray. Besides showing every detail clearly, Mr Gray gave many hints on correct methods of preparation, and answered several questions. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Gray.

Competitions resulted.— Christmas gift costing not more than 1/6: Miss Laird 1, Mrs Ross 2, Mrs Gray 3. Bloom: Mrs Mackenzie 1, Mrs S. P. Bray and Miss Laird (equal) 2. Best three hen eggs (brown): Mrs M. B. Reid 1, Mrs Ross 2, Mrs Mackenzie 3. White, Miss Laird 1, Mrs Cuthbertson 2, Mrs Ibbetson 3.
