THREE FULL POINT WINS

PLAY IN SENIOR COMPETITION

Full point wins were secured by Old Boys A, Timaru and High School when the second series of senior matches in the South Canterbury Cricket Association’s competitions was completed In fine weather on Saturday. The recent rain had a beneficial effect on the wickets, which generally played well.

High School had an Innings victory over Old Boys B at the Rectory, Timaru beat Geraldine by seven wickets at the Park, while the Old Boys A— Temuka match which was commenced at Temuka on the first day and completed at Anzac Square on Saturday, aaw the town team win by five wickets.

TIMARU v. GERALDINE Unable to resist the temptation of opening their shoulders to slow bowling, the Geraldine batsmen scored the moderate total of 88 in their second Innings against Timaru. Seven were caught. F. Stack and Kain opened, the former starting at a merry clip, with Kain .playing carefully. Smith claimed Kain lbw and the total stood at 24. StoneWigg joined Stack and with the latter aggressive the score mounted steadily. He hit Gould for a fine six but shortly afterwards was caught by Wilson on the leg boundary off the same bowler. It was one of the finest catches ever seen on the ground. Stack gave a bright exhibition for 39 and with two wickets down for 64 Geraldine had made a good start. When StoneWigg sent one into the slips after a well-played 24 the country team failed, the side being dismissed before the afternoon tea adjournment. Gould and Smith secured plenty of turn from the wicket and received splendid assistance from the field. In his seventh over Smith took two wickets with successive balls.

Timaru needed 44 runs to win, Walsh and McLauchlan opening. F. Stack claimed Walsh lbw with the total at six, while McLauchlan went shortly afterwards. Smith and Pateman brought the score to 25 when the latter was out lbw and Rollinson assisted the ex-Otago man to obtain the necessary runs without further loss. F. SCHOOL v. OLD BOYS B When stumps were drawn on the opening day School had a first innings total of 167, Old Boys B replying with 30. Following on they had lost five wickets lor 27 runs. Fear, who was 15 not out, and Merritt continued the second innings of Old Boys B, the latter being bowled by Enting with six to his credit. Indications pointed to another easy passage for the School bowlers, but when Knox became associated with Fear, the field was given its hardest work of the match. Playing attractively the pair scored steadily and when Knox was caught off Blue after a smart 35, the partnership had added 62 runs. Fear, who gave a fine display when runs were most needed, scored 61 of the. total of 125. School winning by an innings and 12 runs. Scores: —

OLD BOYS A v. TEMUKA The game between Old Boys A and Temuka was concluded at Anzac Square on Saturday and resulted In a three point win for the former by five wickets. Souter and Mahan, the not out batsmen from the previous week, faced Reynolds from the south end. In his second over Reynolds bowled Souter,

who had added only four to his total. Moore did not last long, losing his wicket to Johnson before he had scored. Johnson also claimed Morrison's wicket and Kane, who followed the latter, was batting confidently when he chopped a ball from Rix on to his wicket. McDonald was bowled by Rix and Sunley hit Johnson for four, only to be caught at tecond slip off the next ball. The Innings closed for 183 runs. Temuka commenced their second innings just after 3 o’clock, Rix and Colville being the opening batsmen. Rix was out In the first over. He had placed Thomson behind point for a brace and two balls later was caught at cover by Moore. Lang opened confidently but did not last long. When he was six he gave Mahan an easy catch at mid-off off Thomson. Colville was run out when Baxter called for a short run. He was not ready and had little chance of getting home, although two fieldsmen were fumbling with the ball. In Thomson’s fifth over Earwaker took a fine catch behind point to dismiss Baxter. Four wickets were then down for 19 runs and Temuka’s position was not promising. Johnson and Reynolds then became associated In a bright partnership which took the score to 56 when Reynolds was stumped by Morrison off the bowling of Kane. Immediately after the afternoon tea adjournment, when Thomson caught Johnson at mid off, the innings was practically over. Garvin was bowled by Moore with an off break and Davies played over a straight ball from Kane. Haar, the last man In, was out first ball and the Innings closed for 65. Temuka batted one man short.

Old Boys need 50 runs for an outright win with nearly two hours to bat. Reynolds opened the bowling for Temuka from the south end and in his first over had Riley caught at first slip by Colville. Earwaker did not last long. He hit Johnson to the boundary but was clean bowled next ball. McDonald, the incomer, batted brightly hitting several boundaries off Johnson. When the total reached 41 McDonald was bowled with a beautiful ball by Reynolds. Mahan only scored five, being beaten all the way by the Temuka fast bowler. Morrison, the Old Boys captain, joined Thomson and these two secured the necessary runs before Morrison lost his wicket to Rix. Scores were:—

Star B beat Geraldine by six wickets at Geraldine. Geraldine went In first, but none of the batsmen reached double figures. McQulrter took six wickets for 24 runs, B. Howard one for 10 runs, and Williams one for 3. Star B replied with 89 (Dickson .), Paisley 28). G. Webb took five for 39 runs, Claydon three for 39, and C. S. Davies one for 13. C. S. Davies put up a good showing for Geraldine on their second appearance, and carried his bat for 35. None of the other batsmen reached double figures. Bracefield, three for eight, and Weir, three for 13, shared the bowling honours. Star B lost four wickets for 35 In their second innings (Williams, not out, 16). Payne took three tor 14, and G. Webb one for 14.

Railway batted first against School and made 122 (Bradley 33, Fearn 15, Stack 16, White 11 and Cunninghams 11). For School, Liddy took two wickets for seven runs, Hunter two for 19, Knowles two for 19, Hay two for 20, Yule one for 15, and Spring one for 18. School made 87 (Grant 33, Spring 12, and McKenzie 11). For Railway, Cunnlnghame took two wickets for 11 runs, White three for 18, Andrews one for 6, Bradley two for 14, and Glrvan two for 20. Railway won on the first Innings. Mr R. McKenzie was the umpire.

Fairview defeated Star A by an Innings and 43 runs. Star made 55 (Andressand 33), W. Stevens taking nine wickets for 23 runs. THIRD GRADE Bruce’s defeated Temuka at Ashbury Park on Saturday by an innings and 96 runs. Bruce’s batted first and compiled 227 runs for six wickets and then declared. S. Dobler batted well and scored 101, Including eight sixes and nine fours. C. Fitzgerald secured 88, 44 of these coming from boundary hits, while he also hit three sixes. J. Allan

with 10 was the other double figure scorer. Wickets for Temuka were taken by Gibb, three for eight, Fletcher one for eight, Quinn one for 33, and Benbow one for 65. Temuka in their first strike made 90 (P. Gilmour 20, Dwan 20 and Quinn 20). Perry took two wickets for six runs, L. Fitzgerald three for 23, Dobler three for 30, and Allen two for 29. Temuka In their second attempt made cnly 41. Thirtyfive of these runs were scored by three batsmen (P. Gilmour 13, George 12 and King 10). Dobler with seven wickets for 15 runs secured the best average, while Fitzgerald took two for two and Rankin one for 17.

Playing at School Park, Waimataital defeated High School by 38 runs on the first Innings. Waimataital batted first, making 118 (Haywood 59, Stcnhouse 26 not Out, Andrews 11). Bowling for School, Newman took seven wickets for 25 runs, Anderson two for 14, and Ensor one for 14. School replied with 80 (Ensor 17, Bignall 17 not out, Evans 10). CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION By Telegraph—Pres. Association CHRISTCHURCH, November 21. The Canterbury Cricket Association’s competitions were continued yesterday afternoon. Showers caused several adjournments. Old Boys v. St. Albans—St. Albans, batting first, made 35 (Batstune 10, Escott three for none, Graham four foils), and Old Boys, two for 83, declared (Menzies 41 not out). Old Boys won on the first innings. St. Albans batted again and lost four for 64 (McCann 38). Sydenham v. West ChristchurchSydenham made 138 (Butterfield 38, Johnston three for 16), and West Christchurch 52 (Burt four for 16, Park three for 18), Sydenham won on the first Innings. Lancaster Park v. Old Collegians— Old Collegians made 173 (Alexander 53, Byrne 29, Read four for 50, Cromb three for 23) and Lancaster Park 231 for five (Shand 97 not out, A. P. Cobden 79). Park won on the first Innings. East Christchurch v. Riccarton—East Christchurch batted first and declared with 264 on for eight wickets (Kennedy 110, Coupland 41, Bull three for 53). Riccarton at stumps had made 191 for two wickets. The match was drawn.

DUNEDIN RESULTS By Telegraph— Press Association DUNEDIN, November 21. The grade cricket competition was continued on f'aturday under fair conditions. Grange 205 and 121 (Chettleburgh 47, Groves six for 48) beat Old Boys 171 (Lemin 5 f .r 46) and 111 for seven (McLeod 52) on the first Innings. Carisbrook ’ 147 and 142 (Dunning 54, Silver six for 58), won outright against Albion 64 and 76 (Dunning five for 40). Carisbrook B 200 and 188 for six (Piddall 70, Nicol 42, Lambert 41) beat Dunedin 143 (Robertson 46), on the first innings. University 155 and 158 (Constable three for 9) won outright against Kalkorai 88 and 129.
