THE ADVENTURES OF MICHAEL
Oh, look! Mike’s caught poor Mervyn Mouse and Is about to eat him, Although the Voice of Conscience cries, “That’s not the way to treat him!” “Oh. spare my life!” cries Mervyn Mouse; “yes, spare it, Michael, please I For I have saved six jars of malt, and half a pound of cheese;
And all of them I give to you if you will set me free . . .” "Well, lead me to them,” Michael says, “and then, perhaps. I’ll see.” —A mouse for six big jars of malt, and cheese as well to eat?— Mike purrs and starts to lick his lips at thought of such a treat!
And cunning Mervyn leads him off as quickly as he can, Then stops at last outside the door of surly Policeman Dan! He rings the doorbell, draws the latch, and says to Mike, “Walk in!" —And then he quickly runs away from the ensuing din!
A minute later, up a tree, poor Mike looks down most sadly. For Policeman Dan is Very peeved, and is behaving badly! And Mervyn Mouse, beside his hole, waves up with laughter great, While Michael scowls and calls to him. “You wait, young mouse! You wait!”
