HARRIERS
WEST END CLUB The annual dinner and presentation of trophies of the West End Harrier Club was held in the West End pavilion. The first part of the evening was devoted to a progressive euchre tournament, a prize given by Mr K. Mayo being won by Mr C. Langrish. The Mayor, Mr P. C. Vinnell, occupied the chair, and the following toasts were honoured: “The King,” “The Club” (Mr K. Mayo—Mr L. Williams), “Kindred Clubs” (Mr C. Langrish—Messrs F. Walker, B. Jones and V. Hadlee), “Friends and Supporters” (Mr C. W. White—Mr J. Chiles).
The Mayoress (Mrs P. C. Vinnell) presented the trophies as follows: Ratepayers’ Handicap—L. Williams 1 and fastest time. I. Gillon 2, J. Donaldson 3.
Club Championship—L. Williams, miniature given by Mr D. Sinclair. Sealed Handicap—C. Langrish 1, W. Chiles 2. Alex. Millar Challenge Cup—J. Donaldson 1, W. Chiles 2, I. Gillon fastest time.
Certificates were presented to the six members of the team which gained fastest time in the Waimate-Timaru road relay, namely, W. Chiles, R. Smith, J. Donaldson, C. Langrish. I. Gillon, L. Williams.
The Attendance Cup was won by W Chiles.
The Mayor, in his speech at the conclusion of the presentation, remarked that he was surprised and gratified at the success of the club during the season, and said that for a small club it had done exceedingly well. If during the next season he could be of my assistance he would be only too eager to do so if it was in his power. He looked on the club as part of his responsibility, as he himself was a West Ender.
