WATER SUPPLY SCHEME

ENGINEER ANSWERS QUERIES LEVELS COUNCIL MEETS A letter from Mr T. G. Beck, resident Public Works engineer, to the Levels County Council at yesterday's meeting, cleared up several points in regard to the rights of objectors in connection with the Downlands Water Supply Scheme. Present.—Messrs T. B. Garrick (chairman), R. G. Cleland, Donald Grant, T. W. Brosnahan, R. W. Munro, and J. E. P. Cameron. Where land on which a house was situated was exempted for some valid reason water could be supplied to the house provided the owner paid for piping and laying to enable the house to be connected to the nearest branch or main, stated Mr Beck, in reply to Inquiries by the Council. Where an objector had a portion of his property exempted but not Including that part on which the house was situated he may have water to his house on the same terms as anyone else. An objector could claim exemption for any part of his property which had a plentiful supply of pure running water, either in the form of springs or running creeks. Portions of his farm not easily accessbile to such supplies would not be entitled to exemption. If he had a satisfactory underground storage system for his house he was not obliged to connect to the high pressure system. The chairman explained that the debit balance on September 1 was £4731/19/3. The amount expended since last meeting was £427/8/6 while receipts totalled £445/19/10, including general rates £326/10/9. The total debit balance on October 6 was £6831/17/1. “We are in about the same position as last year,” said the chairman, who added that the Highways Board subsidy would be to hand shortly. The Tycho Beautifying Society wrote thanking the Council for the assistance It had given in tree planting. It particularly thanked the’ late engineer (Mr Black) without whose help the Society could not have carried out such an extensive scheme. The South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes Tree Planting Committee also wrote acknowledging the assistance of the Council. An application by the Washdyke Progress League for the use of the worked-out portion of the Washdyke pit as a permanent rubbish tip for the township, to prevent rubbish being deposited along the reserve at the lagoon or on the roadsides, was held over. The Council decided to call applications for the position of • county engineer.
