A.J.C. MEETING

TALKING WINS CRAVEN PLATE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received October 6, 11.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 6. The A.J.C. spring meeting was continued at Randwick to-day in dull weather. The attendance was 27,000. Gold Rod, the Epsom winner, never looked a likely winner in the Craven Plate and dropped out of the race when the serious business commenced. Afterwards a report was circulated that Gold Rod had been doped. The trainer, G. Price, hurried Gold Rod home. On examination the horse was found palpably distressed and considerably swollen over the quarters. Gold Rod subsequently completely recovered. The absence of temperature, according to the veterinary surgeon, removed the doubt that an attempt had been made to dope the horse. Price is convinced that it was impossible for anyone to tamper with Gold Rod prior to the race. Avenger is expected to be at his best in the Guineas. The New Zealand-bred colt Cortina is an acceptor in the Debutant Stakes. He cost his owner (Mr Barton) 1000 guineas at the Wellington sales. “A MEAN LITTLE FELLOW”

STORY OF WINNER OF METROPOLITAN United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, October 5. “The Sydney Morning Herald” says: The winner of the Metropolitan was’ such a mean little fellow, when foaled, that his destruction was considered, but he was left at the side of his dam to develop into one of the gamest little horses to win the race. The Metropolitan provided a stirring spectacle, of which the finish was a fitting climax. Sir Regent and Silver Standard were locked together for nearly a furlong. The latter lacked the little extra needed to capitalise. The race was run with perfect understanding between horse and rider, although the merit of Sir Regent’s run cannot be dimmed. Maia's display was not in keeping with his form before the Randwick, but it is indicated that he has not improved by his run in the Spring Stakes, on Saturday.

THE FRENCH WONDER MABE.

SECOND SUCCESS IN RACING CLASSIC United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 4. The French wonder mare Corrida’s second successive win in the Prix de Larc de Trlomphe, bringing her total winnings to £50,000, led French enthusiasts to suggest that she is the biggest stake winning mare in the world. Corrida was sired by the Derby winner Coronach.
