A STRONG FIELD

SOUTH CANTERBURY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP The strongest field for 30 years will tee up on Sunday for the South Canterbury amateur championship to be played on the Highfield links. The course is at present in splendid order, and excellent scoring can safely be predicted. The intermediate and junior titles will also be decided, and the entries in these sections are also strong. The South Canterbury title has always been regarded highly in South Island golfing circles, and it is expected that the high standard of past contests will be fully maintained with the presence of 18 players with handicaps of five and under. The entry of C. B. Wight (1) many times champion of St. Clair (Dunedin), and a former Otago and South Canterbury champion, recalls the marathon struggle when he won the local honour. On that occasion Wight, E. A. Scott and Colbeck tied and in the first play-off Colbeck was eliminated. Wight and Scott had two further playoffs in an endeavour to decide the winner, but it took a third round before the Otago man was successful. J. L. Mackay (plus 1) another former title holder is favourably known in the South Island and his game will have benefited by a fortnight’s golf in the south recently. E. O. Heney (scr) of the Rangiora Club, who recently won the North Canterbury championship, has been in the forefront of Christchurch tournaments in recent years, and was a Canterbury representative this year. D. C. Bennie (1) of Dunedin, is a former winner of the Otago championship. G. A. Ussher (1) was the winner of the King’s Birthday tournament at Highfield, and his form this year was sufficiently consistent for him to reach the final of the Club's singles knockout. E. A. Scott (1) a past holder of the title, is one of the best known figures in South Canterbury golf, and in spite of a season during which he has not been in the prize money, his chances cannot be discounted. E. G. Kerr (2) the present holder, was out of the game for seven weeks this season but he has been playing well recently and is capable of repeating last year’s performance. J. L. Blair (2) is the present Avondale champion. A son of H. Blair, the Shirley professional, he represented CanterburyWest Coast in the provincial match match against Otago-Southland. R. D. Frizzell (2) is another of the younger school of Canterbury golfers, and justified his selection in the Canterbury team. N. C. Martin (3), M. T. Houlihan (3). and Rex Jones (4) are solid Highfield performers, whlie J. W. Gibson of Avondale and D. B. L. Bowker (5), of Russley, have shown good form this season. Bowker has the advantage of being acquainted with the Timaru course. Others who are included in a strong but open field are D. J. Mcßeath (5), A. J. Black (5), of Russley, H. V. Sharpe (5) of Avondale and C. F. W. Allcott (5). Tournament Draw The following is the draw for the Stableford Bogey on Saturday:— North East, 9 a.m.—Lawson v. E. Lawrence and Webber v.
