Enough opium to bring happy dreams to every addict in the Dominion was cast by unappreciative Customs officers into a furnace in the basement of the Customs Department building In Wellington recently, and most of its fumes were discharged into the breezes high above the building. But some fumes escaped the draught, and their sickly and almost nauseating smell permeated the building for a time. Periodically, the confiscated opium, which is sent from all over New Zealand to Wellington, is burned by the Customs officers, and the latest consignment totalled several pounds, but to the smokers for whom is was Intended it was worth much more in pounds sterling. In e form inten ed for smoking the drug is useless for any other purpose, hence the bonfire.
