VISITOR FROM U.S.A.

FRIENDLY CRITICISM By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, October 6. Before leaving for the north to-day Mr Maxwell McMaster, of New York, president of the American Exporters’ and Importers’ Association, and a member of the National Foreign Trade Council of America, who has spent two months in Australia and has been in New Zealand nearly a month, paid a high compliment to the business ability and integrity of New Zealanders. He had nothing but praisfc for New Zealand and its.people, his only criticism being the need for greater population. On the political side there was nothing he wanted to say, but he could say that America was very interested in the ptesent experiment out here in the managemnt of the country’s affairs, and was watching it very closely. His experience had been that in the United States people were far more interested in New Zealand politically and in every other way than people out here had any idea of, judging from the conversations with leading men he had met in New Zealand. “You have a marvellous country with marvellous opportunities for a happy life,” he said. “Your business men I have found an extremely fine type of citizen. They are shrewd but honest, and fine traders.”

He was particularly impressed with the fine quality of young manhood in business in New Zealand, and he thought that spoke well for the future. They are building up their business for the good of New Zealand and for their families. What was wanted was population.
