NORTH ISLAND AWARD By Telegraph- Press Association WELLINGTON, October 5 “This award should have been in force long ago,” said Mr E. M. Langley, one of the employers’ assessors, in expressing satisfaction at the complete settlement reached in the North Island threshing-mill workers, chaffcutters and clover shelters’ dispute in a Conciliation Council to-day. It is the first award of its kind for the North Island and will operate in northern, Wellington and Taranaki districts.
The hours of work are to be between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday inclusive, and between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday. The hourly rates of pay are as follows—All hands, except drivers and feeders, not less than 2/6 (not found), steam drivers 3/- plus 1/6 a day for getting-up steam, English mill feeders 2/9, driver and foremen in tractordriven mills 2/9, drivers on header harvesters 3/- (not found), other workers 2/9 (not found).
The minimum rates of pay for cutting oat-sheaf chaff are—Foremen 5/a 100 bags, feeder 4/9, driver 4/9, three other hands 4/6; when cutting other than sheaf oats double these rates are to be paid. For other classes of workers the rates are as follows: Balers and pressers—Driver 5/6 a 100 bates, feeder 4/9, other hands 4/6.
Oil-power balers —Drivers and feeders 5/- a 100 bites, other hands 4/6. Pressing done from an elevator— Feeder 5/- a 100 bates, other hands 4/6. Work on holidays is to be paid for at double rates. The term of the award is for one year dating so far as wages are concerned, from October 1, 1937, and so far as all other provisions are concerned from the date of signing by the Court of Arbitration.
