FIGHT IN MINE
QUELLED BY POLICE IN AFRICA United Press Association—By Electee Telegraph -Copyright (Received October 6, 1.23 a.m.) JOHANNESBURG, October 5. The police this morning quelled a battle raging a thousand feet below the surface in the West Rand Consolidated Mine.
The trouble began in the compound, when an assault on a Basuto resulted in a midnight battle, in which 2000 native labourers used knives, clubs, spears and stones. The police quelled the disturbance with tear gas, but at dawn, when the natives descended the mine, the fight between the Pondos and Basutos broke out again. The police rushed down the mine and cornered and arrested many men after hard fighting.
