STEEL WOOL
SOME HOUSEHOLD USES Steel wool such as is used for cleaning aluminium ware is also excellent for various household purposes. It may be used dry for cleaning coloured suede shoes, purses, handbags, and so on. It gives even better results than a wire brush. Paint-splashes on glass, tiles, wood, and stonework may be quickly removed if rubbed with a pad of steel wool dipped in turpentine. Before fresh floor stain is applied the oldstalning should be well rubbed over with steel wool and turpentine to make the surface smooth and even. Tjie same treatment is good for restoring parquet flooring that has been neglected and become dirty. The wool, moistened slightly, should be rubbed along the grain of the wood. Teak draining-boards and table tops should be scoured occasionally with steel wool and wa "r. Teak doors, gates, and pieces of garden furniture may be cleaned in the same way, and afterwards brushed over with linseed oil to keep them a good colour. Splashes of lime-wash on cellar floors or pantry slabs are easily removed by ■ scouring with a large pad of steel wool.
