FATAL BOXING BOUT
INQUIRY OPENED By Telegraph—Press Association GREYMOUTH, October 4. An inquest was opened to-day into the death of the boxer, Stan Smith, Mr Raymond Ferner presiding. Leonard W. Dailey, trainer and manager for Smith, said that Smith was medically examined on Saturday and pronounced fit. Witness said Smith won the first round. Smith was floored in the second, and said at the interval that he did not feel too good, but said nothing about not continuing the fight. When hit with a left and then a right hook to the jaw in the third round, Smith fell practically straight down on his face. Witness said he did not think that Smith received the injury by the fail. Witness had no fault to find with Sharpe nor with the arrangements for the fight. He was satisfied that the injury was unavoidable. There was no feeling between Sharpe and Smith, who had not met previously. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
