HIGH PRAISE GIVEN

BEST OVA OBTAINED FOR YEARS Complimentary reference to the type of brown and rainbow trout ova supplied out of surplus amounts to the Wellington and Otago Societies was received from those bodies by the Council of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society at its monthly meeting at Temuka last evening. The remarks were included in letters received by the ranger (Mr F. W. Pellett) and communicated to the Council with the'ranger’s report. The Wellington letter contained the following.— “With reference to the brown trout ova supplied by you, we were very pleased to receive what we did, realising how short the notice was. Our ranger- is most enthusiastic about it and h? reported to us that it is the best ova that has been in our hatchery for many years, and such praise from him is praise Indeed for I never thought that anything could excel Otago ova in his estimation. You may be sure that we shall have our order in to your society much earlier next year.” The Otago Society wrote stating that the supply of ova from South Canterbury had proved a successful experiment. The South Canterbury eggs had contained only a relatively few dead eggs.

“Well there you are, gentlemen. While we continue to keep the present type of fish in our rivers we will not go in need- of suitable ova,” said the chairman, after the reading of the letters. “We need not take notice of those who continue to press for alterations in our regulations, and I think it is a vote of onfidence in the policy we have followed.’’ Mr H. J. Washer remarked that it was obviously well worth while to help others when the society had a surplus. The chairman concluded the discussion by maintaining that the Society never had a surplus, in his opinion. It could do with all the fry it could get. The Council had been wise in stocking up?” well as it possibly could, and while he remained chairman he intended to stand for the conservation and replenishing of supplies wherever possible.
