LOCAL BODY AMALGAMATION By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 18. A remit from Auckland, Otago, North Taranaki, the combined conference at Dannevirke, South Taranaki, North Canterbury and Southland, that the Government should set up an expert commission to investigate local body amalgamation, was adopted by the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at Wellington. It was resolved also that provision should be made in the Local Bodies Amalgamation Bill so that no scheme of amalgamation would be put into effect unless endorsed by a poll of ratepayers affected. A remit supported by South Taranaki and the combined conference at Dannevirke, opposing Interference with the franchise in rural local body elections, was adopted, as was one objecting to abolition of the county riding system, submitted by Southland.
