LATEST ADVICES The Karepo which arrived on Sunday, discharged Australian coal at Timaru yesterday and sailed for Oamaru. The Waipahi, which arrived on Saturday night, picked up Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth cargo at Timaru yesterday and sailed for Lyttelton. The Kent commenced loading for London and West Coast of England ports yesterday. She should sail to-day for Lyttelton.

The Wainui is set down to arrive on Thursday from Oamaru for Wellington, Napier and Gisborne loading. The Storm should take Wellington and Wanganui cargo from Timaru on Thursday. K-jmara Sold Well known at Timaru, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line steamer Kumara has been sold, according to advice in a London shipping journal. The Kumara last visited New Zealand in April, sailing from Wellington on April 18 and arriving at Dunkirk on June 3. Built at Belfast by Harland and Wolff, Limited, the Kumara was a wartime "standard” ship. A twin-screw steamer of 7926 tons gross register she was launched in 1919 as the Bardic and for some years sailed under the flag of the White Star Line, mainly in the Australian trade. About 10 years ago, when homeward bound with a full cargo of wool and frozen meat, the Bardic ran ashore on a reef at the Lizzard and was refloated with difficulty. She was transferred to the Aberdeen Line and renamed Horatlus, under which name she made several voyages to Australia and New Zealand.

Finally she was acquired by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line, and renamed Kumara. She completed her fifth voyage under that name last month. The new owners of the ship are not stated.

Oil-Engined Passenger Liners

There are now 20 big oil-engined passenger liners trader construction in British yards. This number, according to “The Motor Ship,” is considerably in excess of steamers. Even in the largest sizes, oil-engine propulsion is being employed substantially more than steam machinery, and 10 of the motor ships are of between 18,000 tons gross and 28,000 tons gross, with machinery ranging from 12,000 h.p. to 32,000 h.p. The largest motor liners are for the Union Castle Mall Steamship Company and the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line respectively, each being of about 26,500 tons gross. Largest Dutch Liner The launching took place recently of the largest Dutch liner, Nieuw Amsterdam, the hull of which has been built by the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschipplj. Queen Wilhelmina of Holland performed the ceremony. The liner is twice the size of the largest vessel previously built in Holland. It will have a gross tonnage of 33,000 and a displacement tonnage of 45,000. Her dimensions are: Length, 751itt.; breadth, 88ft; depth, 55ft. She is a twin-screw turbine-driven vessel. Her speed will be about 19 knots. There will be accommodation for about 50Q cabin class passengess, 500 tourist class, and 250 third class, making a total of 1,250 passengers. She has a cruiser stem, with Inclined stem and a llared bow.
