ALPINE NOMENCLATURE

To the Editor of " The Timaru Herald.” Sir,—May I correct one or two errors in the list you published in July 10? C. E. Douglas, after whom the Glacier and Peak were named, was not drowned in the Teremakau River. He died in Hokitika Hospital. Tills error would have amused my old mate, Douglas, because he said that “Not being able to swim had saved his life many times!” He was a great explorer. “Harper’s Saddle” was not named by me, but by the West Coast Survey after I made the first ascent in 1890 with R. N. Blakiston. I never named anything after myself. “Hicks” and Dampier” were always so named on the West Coast Survey, corresponding to St. David’s Dome and Hector on the Eastern maps. The West Coast names have been adopted as most suitable. “Ball Pass” was named by Mannering and me when we made the first crossing in 1890. I think lam correct in saying that Green only named the Glacier. Messrs Wright and Chambers are, I believe, responsible for “Jellicoe” and “Sturdee.” There are some other minor corrections which I can supply your contributor if he wishes.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR P. HARPER. Wellington, July 14, 1937.
